What did I learn today? First do no harm... #1

My wife's grandaunt was doing some cleaning around the house yesterday evening when she slipped on a wet floor and took one for the team.  She lay on the ground for several minutes, unable to move due to pain, yelling out the names of her neighbors, hoping someone would come to her rescue.  Come they did, all three of them, breaking in through a side window.  As you continue to read and mental images of the latest emergency notification system pop up in your mind, the neighbors called the daughter, and the daughter called 9-1-1.

The ambulance whisked this poor lady off to the hospital, where she received excellent medical care, including potent pain control with none other than, morphine.  Fortunately, she had strong bones or luck on her side, and sustained no significant fractures, this time.  As she was preparing to roll out of the Emergency Department, she got some "one-for-the-road" morphine.

That night, she woke up in a frenzy, not realizing where she was or when it was.  She rose from bed and attempted to sit down on a chair, with as much luck as a drunkard trying to thread a needle on the first try.  Round two, I've fallen and I can't get up, again!  She somehow managed to contact her daughter, and a short 9-1-1 later, she was back in the Emergency Department.  This time, she had managed to fracture her thumb.

Note to self: watch it with morphine in little old ladies who live on their own...

elderly, fall, pain, medication, narcotics, dangerous, morphine, fracture, hip, back, geriatrics
