    A Torn Meniscus and the Moon

    The menisci of the knee are crescent-shaped pieces of cartilage which lie between the femur and tibia, and serve to cushion the weight of the body and reduce friction during movement. Here is a view of the menisci from above, looking down on the tibia, depicting the medial meniscus (blue arrows) and the lateral meniscus
