Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's determined by your personality, thoughts, and behaviors. Although you may have thought, as many people do, that happiness comes from being born rich or beautiful or living a stress-free life, the reality is that those things don't confer lasting happiness. Lasting happened is cultivated when you focus on the positives in the present moment.

A look inside: Anatomy of nicotine addiction [video]

I recently came across this brief video from the Mayo Clinic that demonstrates the way in which nicotine stimulates receptors in the brain to release dopamine, thus triggering a pleasure response, and how, over time, the brain's anatomy changes as the number of nicotine receptors increases.

Practical relaxation techniques to reduce stress

Last week, I wrote about the possibility of counteracting the aging effects of stress with light to moderate exercise. Now that we've explored ways to get the heart pumping to more effectively manage stress, it's time to take a look at various relaxation techniques that you can also use to deal with stress in order to lead a more healthy, happy life.

Mindful eating vs. obesity: What's the connection?

There's a lot of talk these days about the effects that mindful eating (which include, among other things, chewing your food slowly, savoring every bite, and eating free of the distractions of a cell phone, computer, or television) have on weight management, much of it centered around a new book by Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh and Dr. Lilian Cheung called "Savor."

Why I Became a HealthCare Professional

I think I was one of those lucky ones. As long ago as I can remember, I always knew I wanted to be a physician. I consider myself lucky enough to have become one, having been the first person in my family to go to college. I always loved the study of life sciences. Although actually having been pretty shy as a child, I have always loved the human interaction. It has always felt to me that as a physician I could help others in ways that no other profession would prepare me to be able to do. Becoming a physician has turned out to be everything I thought it would and much, much more. I only hope every patient I see feels that I have done something for them anywhere near what I feel every patient encounter does for me.

My philosophy of Care

Mission Statement: We intend to deliver the highest quality medical care, resulting in the best possible outcomes. We care about our patients beyond the scope of medicine. They are our friends, our neighbors, and our family. To care less is unacceptable. We aim to be the Urgent Care, Occupational Care, Physical Therapy and Primary Care of choice for patients of all ages in our market area. We want them to think of us first, as the only logical place to call for their medical needs. We might not be able to 'treat' every patient who calls, but we will 'help' everyone who does. We are in business to make a profit. To offer our services at reasonable fees, we have to control our costs and make sure that more and more patients who need our services come to see us. We aim to practice in a positive, uplifting and rewarding work environment for all who give service here.
